We knew Up was one of Pixar’s most beloved movies, but we were not fully prepared for how quickly it gets you invested in Carl and Ellie’s life together. This movie destroyed us in the best way possible and we didn't even see it coming.

Up (2009) follows Carl Fredricksen, an elderly widower who spent his life dreaming of adventure with his wife, Ellie. After losing Ellie and facing the possibility of being forced out of their home, Carl decides to fulfill their lifelong dream by tying thousands of balloons to the house and flying it toward Paradise Falls in South America.

Directed by Pete Docter and co-directed by Bob Peterson, with music by Michael Giacchino, the film stars Ed Asner as Carl, Jordan Nagai as Russell, Bob Peterson as Dug and Alpha, and Christopher Plummer as Charles Muntz. The movie blends comedy, adventure, and deep emotion as Carl’s journey turns into something much more meaningful than he expected.

Carl soon discovers that Russell, a young Wilderness Explorer, accidentally came along for the ride. Together, they land near Paradise Falls and encounter a giant exotic bird named Kevin, a talking dog named Dug, and Carl’s childhood hero, Charles Muntz, whose obsession with proving himself has turned him into something far more dangerous.

As the adventure unfolds, Carl is forced to confront the grief he has been carrying and the life he keeps trying to preserve exactly as it was. Through Russell, Dug, Kevin, and the memory of Ellie, Carl begins to understand that adventure is not only about reaching a destination. Sometimes the greatest adventure is the life you shared with someone and the courage to keep living after they’re gone.
