Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022) follows an 11-year-old Gru, voiced by Steve Carell, as he dreams of becoming the world’s greatest supervillain. Growing up in the 1970s, Gru idolizes the Vicious 6, a powerful team of villains led by Belle Bottom after they betray their former leader, Wild Knuckles.

When Gru gets the chance to audition for the Vicious 6, he believes this could be the beginning of his villain career. But the group rejects him for being too young, and Gru responds by stealing the Zodiac Stone, a powerful artifact they had just taken from Wild Knuckles. This makes Gru the enemy of the most dangerous villains in the world.

With Gru in danger, the Minions try to help in their own chaotic way. Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto are separated across the adventure, with Otto trying to recover the Zodiac Stone and the others training under Master Chow to learn kung fu. Meanwhile, Gru forms an unexpected bond with Wild Knuckles, the very villain the Vicious 6 betrayed.

Directed by Kyle Balda, the film connects the Minions’ mayhem with Gru’s early development, showing how his ambition, loneliness, and need for belonging helped shape the villain he would eventually become. What begins as a goofy animated adventure becomes a story about friendship, mentorship, loyalty, and the strange little family Gru finds with the Minions.
