Project Hail Mary follows Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, a science teacher who wakes up alone aboard a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or how he got there. As he begins to piece together his past, he discovers that Earth is facing extinction because of a mysterious substance affecting the sun, and that he has been sent across space on a desperate mission to find a solution.

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and based on the novel by Andy Weir, the film turns Grace’s memory loss into the engine of the story. Each recovered memory reveals more about the crisis on Earth, the people behind the mission, and the impossible stakes of what he has been asked to do.

One of the biggest emotional surprises of the story is Rocky, an alien Grace encounters during the mission. What begins as an impossible first-contact situation slowly becomes one of the heartbeats of the film, as Grace and Rocky learn to communicate, trust each other, and work together to solve a problem that threatens both of their worlds. Their bond gives the movie a much deeper emotional layer, turning the mission from a lonely survival story into a story about friendship, cooperation, and finding hope in the most unexpected place.

As Grace works to understand the science behind the threat, his mission becomes more complicated and more emotional than he ever expected. What begins as a lonely survival story in space grows into a story about discovery, connection, sacrifice, and one last chance to save humanity.

Greg Fraser delivers some gorgeous imagery that will stick with us forever. This movie has a strong identity both visually and thematically and it's one of the best sci-fi movies of our time.
