(new) In March 1945, Nazi Germany is collapsing. The war has reached German soil, and the final countdown to surrender has begun. On March 6, 1945, with 63 days left before the end of the war in Europe, US troops occupy Cologne, the first major German city to fall to the Western Allies. Just one day later, American forces capture the damaged but still usable Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen, giving the Allies their first bridgehead across the Rhine. The news shocks Hitler and alarms Stalin, who immediately pushes forward planning for the Soviet offensive on Berlin.

This documentary follows the last 100 days of the Third Reich as Germany turns into a battlefield. In the west, American, British and Canadian troops advance across the Rhine, while commanders such as George S. Patton, Bernard Montgomery, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Winston Churchill argue over strategy and prestige. In the east, the Red Army reaches the Oder, captures Konigsberg, advances on Vienna and prepares for the final battle for Berlin. Meanwhile, Joseph Goebbels uses the last German newsreels to spread fear of the Red Army and demand resistance to the end. Hitler withdraws into the Reich Chancellery, decorates child soldiers, orders the murder of political opponents and issues the Nero Decree on March 19, 1945, calling for Germany’s infrastructure to be destroyed before it falls to the enemy. From Cologne and Remagen to Flossenburg, Hadamar, Konigsberg and the Oder front, this episode shows a regime in ruins, still killing, lying and destroying as surrender becomes inevitable.
