On the morning of the twenty-sixth of August, 2026, seismometers across the Himalayas recorded a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. There was no earthquake. What the instruments had picked up was a mountain arriving at the bottom of its own valley.
Roughly 20 kilometres inside Tibet, a section of Langtang Lirung failed, fell 1,200 metres, and dammed a river with its own rubble. When that dam broke, the water covered its first 22 kilometres in under seven minutes.

It did not stop in the mountains. Within a day it had crossed 100 kilometres, out of the emptiest part of Nepal and into the most crowded. Six percent of Nepalis live in the mountains everyone pictures. More than half live on flat ground.
