Ronnie Jackson is a baby photographer. Not a private detective. Not a hardboiled sleuth. Not the kind of man who stares down dangerous criminals with a cigarette dangling from his lip and a gun in his pocket. He takes pictures of babies in San Francisco, and he is, by all accounts, very good at it.
But trouble has a way of finding the wrong man at exactly the right moment.
When a gorgeous, dark-haired woman named Carlotta stumbles into his office terrified, breathless, and desperately in need of help Ronnie does what any sensible man would do when confronted with a face like that: he forgets all about being sensible. Mistaken for the real private eye next door, he agrees to help Carlotta track down her missing uncle and a mysterious map that a ring of very dangerous, very humorless criminals will stop at nothing to recover.
What follows is one of the most gloriously funny send-ups of the hard-boiled detective genre ever committed to film. Ronnie stumbles through shadowy mansion corridors, gets knocked unconscious at regular intervals, threatens villains with a confidence wildly disproportionate to his actual abilities, and falls deeper and deeper in love with a woman who is clearly, by any objective measure, far too good for him. The bad guys are genuinely bad. The danger is genuinely dangerous. And Ronnie Jackson is genuinely, magnificently, catastrophically out of his depth and completely incapable of admitting it.
Bob Hope was at the very peak of his comedic powers in My Favorite Brunette, and the result is a masterclass in the art of the coward who keeps showing up anyway. His Ronnie is not brave he is simply too lovesick and too stubborn to run, which in the end amounts to the same thing. Dorothy Lamour brings warmth, wit, and an effortless elegance to her role, making it entirely believable that a man would throw himself headfirst into international conspiracy for her sake. Together they are one of Hollywood's most delightful comic pairings.
Directed by Elliott Nugent with a sure hand and a fondness for the very genre it is spoofing, My Favorite Brunette lands every joke while maintaining just enough genuine tension to make the laughs feel earned. It is the kind of film that reminds you that comedy and danger make the finest of companions and that a baby photographer with enough heart can solve any mystery, provided someone else does most of the actual detecting.
