पश्चिम बंगाल फ़तह करने के बाद भाजपा का अगला लक्ष्य पंजाब है। पश्चिम बंगाल और उड़ीसा में भाजपा पहली बार सरकार बना चुकी है। बिहार में भी पहली बार उसका मुख्यमंत्री बना है। उत्तर भारत में भाजपा के लिए एकमात्र चुनौती पंजाब है। पंजाब भाजपा के उत्तर भारत विजय के अलावा राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा के लिए सबसे महत्वपूर्ण राज्यों में से एक है। पंजाब की सीमा पाकिस्तान से लगती है। जम्मू कश्मीर के बाद पाक ख़ुफ़िया एजेंसी आईएसआई यहाँ सबसे ज़्यादा सक्रिय है। पाकिस्तान से मादक पदार्थों और हथियारों की तस्करी बड़े पैमाने पर होती है। राज्य सरकार के लिए इसे रोकना प्राथमिकता नहीं है। अकाली दल से पिंड छूटने के बाद भाजपा अब अपने पैरों पर खड़ा होना चाहती है। अगले साल होने वाला विधानसभा चुनाव उसके लिए बहुत बड़ा अवसर है । देखना है कि वह इसका लाभ उठा पाएगी या नहीं

Beyond the context of the BJP's North Indian conquest, Punjab is one of the most critical states for national security. Punjab shares its border with Pakistan. After Jammu and Kashmir, the Pakistani intelligence agency—the ISI—is most active here. Narcotics and weapons are smuggled from Pakistan on a massive scale. Curbing this menace does not appear to be a priority for the state government. Having finally broken free from its alliance with the Akali Dal, the BJP now seeks to stand on its own feet. The assembly elections scheduled for next year present a tremendous opportunity for the party. It remains to be seen whether or not it will be able to capitalize on it.
