Two days after the BJP's first-ever victory in West Bengal, the closest aide of the state's top BJP leader was shot dead in a crowded area near Kolkata.

While the BJP has blamed the TMC for the chilling murder of 40-year-old Chandranath Rath, the Trinamool Congress has denied the allegations, pointing to two of its own workers killed in post-poll violence. Meanwhile, BJP workers staged protests and blocked the National Highway in Medinapur over Rath's killing.
