THE PLOT:
During the height of the Second Punic War in 218 BC, the brilliant and vengeful Carthaginian General Hannibal Barca (Victor Mature) launches a daring, unprecedented military campaign to crush the Roman Republic. Leading a vast, formidable army of soldiers and war elephants, Hannibal achieves the impossible by crossing the treacherous Pyrenees and the freezing, deadly peaks of the Alps to strike at the heart of Italy. As he marches through the Italian peninsula, defeating Roman legions at every turn, the Roman senate falls into absolute panic. The political faction led by the cautious Fabius Maximus (Gabriele Ferzetti) desperately tries to halt his advance. Amidst the chaos of war, the plot takes a dramatic, romantic turn when Hannibal captures Sylvia (Rita Gam), the beautiful niece of Senator Fabius Maximus. Instead of treating her as a prisoner, Hannibal falls deeply in love with her, a forbidden passion that soon threatens to compromise his tactical genius and alter the very course of Western history.
