If you are studying IT or cybersecurity right now, trying to break in, you have to know that the market has changed. What worked three years ago does not work anymore. And if nobody corrects your approach, you could spend the next two years or more applying to jobs and getting nothing back. So in this video we are going to talk about how to prepare, and how to get hired.

Let's start with the uncomfortable truth. Most IT and cybersecurity degrees teach you the theory, but they do not teach you what companies across the world are actually hiring for right now. So if you are only relying on your coursework or certificates, you are already behind. You need to build your own curriculum on top of it, and that starts with understanding the landscape.

Cybersecurity is not one job. It is dozens of different paths. Security operations, penetration testing, GRC and compliance, cloud security, incident response, identity and access management and so on. Each one is different, and each one attracts a different kind of person. So before you go deeper, spend time exploring at a high level. If you like structure and rules, compliance and GRC might suit you. If you like breaking things to understand them, offensive security might be your lane. If you like protecting infrastructure at scale, cloud security is where the demand is heading. Find the one that actually pulls you in, because that pull is what keeps you working on it at nine p.m. on a Tuesday when everyone else is watching Netflix.
