The 2000s looked like a golden age for sci-fi on the surface; Matrix sequels, Star Wars prequels, the birth of the superhero era. But while everyone was lining up for the familiar, a wave of genuinely bold, original science fiction was quietly dying at the box office. We're talking about movies with real ideas, real directors, and real ambition that barely made a dent, films that inspired massive blockbusters without getting any of the credit, micro-budget miracles that outperformed every expectation and still got ignored, and studio projects that fell apart for reasons that had nothing to do with quality.
