The 2000s looked like a golden age for sci-fi on the surface; Matrix sequels, Star Wars prequels, the birth of the superhero era. But while everyone was lining up for the familiar, a wave of genuinely bold, original science fiction was quietly dying at the box office. We're talking about movies with real ideas, real directors, and real ambition that barely made a dent, films that inspired massive blockbusters without getting any of the credit, micro-budget miracles that outperformed every expectation and still got ignored, and studio projects that fell apart for reasons that had nothing to do with quality.
These aren't obscure for no reason. Most of them had everything going for them and still got buried by bad timing, wrong audiences, or studios that had no idea what they were holding.
