Ned rides up over a hill looking down at the Lannister army rushing into the gates. For a moment, he considers attacking the Lannister host while they're distracted, but then decides against it. There was another option, one of the other gates besides the Kingsgate, probably the Old Gate since that was the closest to them. They had to get to the Red Keep. If Tywin was attacking the capital, he likely meant to make himself king and slaughter the Targaryens like he had the Reynes and Tarbecks.

Ned: Greatjon, Lord Karstark, on me. We're hitting that gate there!

Yelling, the northmen and their rebel allies charge toward the Old Gate. With all the defenders focused on Lord Tywin's assault, there's no one there to stop the Northmen from breaking through the gates and charging through the streets. As they near the Red Keep, Ned sees Jaime Lannister leading the defense, even fighting several of his father's men at the same time. Not wanting the knight to fight alone, Ned attacks, smashing into the Lannister forces and pushing them back before retreating inside the keep.

Ned: Ser Jaime, what is going on here?

Jaime: Lord Stark, I didn't expect to be fighting alongside you. My father decided to sack the city after the King let him in. I-

Messenger: Ser Jaime, the king commands you to bring him your father's head. Oh, and Lord Rosart is with the King.

Jaime’s face immediately pales and he makes as if to rush toward the Keep. Ned grabs his arm and prevents him from going.

Ned: Wait, Ser Jaime. This isn't time for anger. We need to push Tywin back.

Jaime: You don't understand! There's enough wildfire stockpiles under the city to destroy everyone and everything within the walls. If Rosart is with the king, then that means Aerys has given the order to ignite them.

Ned: Ah. Very well, yes, this is a good time for anger, let's go kill him.

Jaime and Ned rush into the Red Keep, first finding Rosart and killing him then making their way to the Mad King. Aerys glares at Ned as he enters, long fingernails matted with scars and a few cuts. Ned narrows his eyes at the man who'd murdered his father and brother and hefts his sword. Jaime advances toward the mad king, but Ned puts his hand on the younger man's shoulder.

Ned: No, Ser Jaime, I'll kill him. You shouldn't need to soil your cloak for a wretch like this.

Aerys: You cannot kill me, I am the dragon. You will all burn!

Not wanting to wait, Ned swings his sword once. Aerys’ head tumbles from his shoulders and drops to the ground. Jaime sags in relief and gives Ned a grateful look, then leans his sword against his shoulder.

Ned: Are princess Elia safe? We should ensure their safety and get them out of the city.

Instantly, Jaime glances in the direction of Maegor's Holdfast and takes off. Muttering about impatient young men who rushed around without saying anything, Ned runs after Jaime toward the castle within a castle. When they arrive, a group of Lannister men have slipped past the Northmen holding the gates and are climbing the walls.

Ned: We need to get in there and rescue the princess.

Jaime: C'mon, I’ve got a way in.

Ned: I'll follow your lead.

Jaime and Ned rush toward the gate, the golden haired man yelling toward the fortifications to lower the drawbridge. Seeing the Kingsguard cloak, the guards lower the bridge and allow the two inside, right as Gregor and Amory Lorch burst through the doors of the inner keep. Both Ned and Jaime chase after the two men. Amory breaks off from the mountain, forcing the pursuers to split up. Jaime quickly catches up to Amory and kills him, then runs to find Rhaenys. The girl is hiding under her father's bed, looking frightened, holding her black cat. Jaime extends his hand toward her, causing the girl to slide out from under the bed and rush into his arms. Jaime picks the girl up and runs to find Ned. When the Lord of Winterfell catches up with the Mountain the huge man is attempting to break down the door to Elia's room.
