The Nile is the longest river on Earth, and almost everyone believes it belongs to Egypt. It doesn't begin there. It begins in Uganda, at the northern rim of Lake Victoria, where the water turns and heads north on a four-thousand-mile journey. But the waterfall that marked the exact spot, the one a British officer named in 1862 and crossed a continent to reach, has been underwater since 1954, drowned by a dam. And the country agreed to something stranger still: to release its water at exactly the rate the vanished falls once did.
