Long before campaign speeches and television interviews, Tulsi Gabbard volunteered for the Hawaii Army National Guard in 2003. She deployed to Iraq with a medical unit, earning the Combat Medical Badge for serving under hostile conditions. Later, she deployed again to Kuwait as a Military Police platoon leader, continuing her service even as her public profile grew.

In 2012, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, but unlike many politicians, she never left the uniform behind. Gabbard continued fulfilling military duties, later deploying to the Horn of Africa in 2021 and rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel.
