Synopsis:

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city, home to millions of people and built across a landscape shaped by dozens of volcanic centres. Although many of its cones appear peaceful today, the volcanic field beneath the city is not extinct.

Scientists investigate Auckland’s explosive geological past and examine what could happen when the next eruption occurs. Using geological evidence, computer modelling and emergency planning, they explore where a new volcano might emerge, how quickly an eruption could develop and whether the city would be prepared.

Through spectacular aerial footage and scientific analysis, the documentary reveals the hidden danger beneath Auckland and the extraordinary challenge of protecting a modern city built on volcanic ground.
