Ben Stiller set out to make Tropic Thunder over two decades before it was produced. He got the idea on the set of a Stephen Spielberg film, and ironically Spielberg was the one who came in and got the movie made.

The movie carried several risks, particularly the characters that Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr play. But it wasn't just the controversial nature of the film, it was also incredibly expensive to get made and didn't have any existing IP power...Making the movie all around anything but a sure thing to perform well at the box office.

I go through the entire journey from idea conception to pre production (which included several key actors including Owen Wilson and Mos Def being replaced) to production, to the stress of the release and all of the after effects on the likes of Jack Black, Jay Baruchel, Brandon T Jackson, Tom Cruise and more!
