Why does the proton survive while the neutron falls apart?

At first, protons and neutrons seem almost like twins. They sit together inside atomic nuclei. They are made of quarks. They are held together by the strong nuclear force. And together, they build the matter that makes planets, stars, oceans, mountains and living bodies possible.

But when they are alone, their stories become very different.

A free neutron is unstable. After about fifteen minutes, it can decay into a proton, an electron and an antineutrino through the weak nuclear force. A proton, on the other hand, appears to be incredibly stable. No confirmed proton decay has ever been observed, even though physicists have searched for it for decades in enormous underground detectors.

So why does one particle fall apart while the other seems to endure?

In this science documentary, we explore the riddle of the proton and neutron. We will travel inside the atomic nucleus, into the world of quarks, gluons, beta decay, the weak force, nuclear binding energy and the Standard Model of particle physics.
