Deep inside Mexico’s Copper Canyons, the Rarámuri have been running across mountains and desert trails for centuries.

For these Indigenous communities, running is far more than a sport. It is tied to spirituality, survival, health and their connection to the land. Children walk for hours to school, elders remember races that united entire villages, and young champions like Catalina Rascon and Miguel Lara carry on a tradition passed down through generations.

But life in the canyons is changing. Economic hardship, tourism and the growing threat of cartel violence now cast a shadow over events like the famous Caballo Blanco Ultra, where Rarámuri runners compete alongside athletes from around the world.

As thousands gather to run through the mountains, one question remains: are the Rarámuri sharing their culture with the world… or fighting to preserve it?
