The Grand Return Of Cartoon Cartoons

Let me be the first to say a totally original thing, animation…isn’t in the best spot right now, you name it, layoffs, greedy corporate execs, the dumbest cancellations known to man, they all eventually fall into a melting pot of why animation and especially many animators struggle to either be heard or have their ideas seen, it definitely feels that way after the major Sag aftra strikes back in ‘22, where everyone, from animators, to storyboard artists to writers refused to work on anything unless compensated fairly, and even then, tensions still feel somewhat high.

You could make the argument that it’s made way for indie animations to burst onto the scene and become an industry of their own, something I covered in the past myself, but even then, it’s still a very shaky industry at best with a constant need for funding weather through patreon or merch sales or a labor of love at best with many companies like glitch taking the reigns with new breeds of creators and letting them tell the stories they want to.

I’m not trying to make this a sad video to start off with and I do apologise if it came off that way, but the point I’m trying to make is that at the time of writing this, it’s a little hard to tell where this industry’s going, but there is something that's given me a good amount of hope for its future.

On April 15th 2021, it was announced that there would be a shorts program under a name a lot of you might find familiar, Cartoon cartoons, an internal program at the CN and warner bros offices that allowed for it’s talent to showcase their ideas in the form of a pilot, it’s a pretty big deal seeing how this is what gets produced at the dawn of every TV show, and, at least in the old days, how CN got their original slate of shows for what would eventually become Cartoon Cartoon fridays.

And now, here we are, in the grand 26, these pilots can finally see the light of day and we get the privilege at looking over each and every one of them, right here right now, so come join me as we go over the possible future of Cartoon network itself.
