Directed by Luc Besson and executive produced by Martin Scorsese, The Family is a 2013 black comedy crime thriller that blends mafia tropes with fish-out-of-water humor. Based on Tonino Benacquistas novel Malavita, the plot stars Robert De Niro as Giovanni Manzoni, a notorious Brooklyn mob boss who snitches on his rival kingpin. Placed in the FBI witness protection program under the strict supervision of Agent Robert Stansfield (Tommy Lee Jones), Giovanni and his family are relocated to a sleepy village in Normandy, France. Adopting the alias Fred Blake, he poses as a historical author while struggling to suppress his violent criminal instincts.
The narrative thrives on the family's inability to assimilate into peaceful civilian life, as they repeatedly handle everyday frustrations with casual mob-style brutality. The screenplay focuses on the individual subplots of the clan: Giovannis wife Maggie (Michelle Pfeiffer) blows up a bigoted grocery store, his daughter Belle (Dianna Agron) violently rejects local suitors, and his son Warren (John D'Leo) establishes a mini-mafia network within his new school. The fragile cover identity completely unravels when a random school newspaper article tips off the imprisoned Don Luchese, who dispatches a ruthless squad of hitmen to assassinate the family.
Featuring an explicit meta-nod to Robert De Niros cinematic legacy with an inline screening of Goodfellas, the movie explores themes of identity, institutional hypocrisy, and unbreakable blood ties. The production moves from dark character comedy into a visceral, explosive third-act shootout that showcases the family unit working in perfect, lethal harmony. While polarizing for its abrupt shifts between domestic satire and sudden violence, the film remains a unique entry in the gangster subgenre. Ultimately, the story is a fast-paced survival epic of an unreformable crime dynasty.
