Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will make her first official visit to India from July 1 to 3, attending the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit at PM Modi's invitation. The visit comes at a pivotal moment, with both nations deepening their Special Strategic and Global Partnership against the backdrop of an increasingly assertive China and a global energy crisis triggered by the US-Israel-Iran war.

The agenda is wide-ranging, covering defence and security, trade and investment, technology, clean energy, semiconductors, critical minerals and artificial intelligence. Energy security takes centre stage, with Japan having launched the POWERR Asia initiative, pledging $10 billion to help Asian nations facing fuel disruptions, alongside its Joint Vision 2035 roadmap targeting 10 trillion yen in investment into India over the next decade.

Beyond New Delhi, Japan's growing engagement with India's Northeast, through connectivity projects, skilling MoUs and the Act East Forum, is emerging as a quiet but significant counterbalance to Chinese influence in the region, positioning Northeast India as a bridge in Japan's Free and Open Indo-Pacific vision.
