After surviving years as a political prisoner after WWII—kept alive only by uncanny luck while forced to play Russian roulette for a sadistic Russian colonel—former policeman Comisarul Moldovan emerges hardened and restless, drifting into an international illegal gambling circuit built around death itself. In the late 1970s, fate leads him to a Central European town where an old acquaintance, Goldberg, runs a brutal “improved” version of the game in which opponents shoot at each other, drawing Moldovan into a deadly reunion with familiar friends and enemies that echoes the shadowy Bucharest underworld of the 1940s.
