In 1965, Singapore covered around 580 square kilometers. Today it covers more than 720, and nearly a fifth of the country stands on ground that was open sea within living memory. To build it, the island became the largest sand importer on Earth, until Indonesia, Cambodia, and Malaysia each shut the trade down. Now, as the sea rises against a coast it spent sixty years pushing back, Singapore has begun draining new land below the waterline behind a wall of pumps. This is the story of a nation that manufactured the ground beneath its feet, and the bill that came due.
