Fletcher Munson, a painfully passive worker for the Eventualist self-help empire, drifts through life avoiding effort, emotion, and his wife—until a colleague’s death awkwardly promotes him to speechwriter for the group’s charismatic founder. Seizing the new role as the perfect excuse for distance, Munson barely reacts when he discovers his wife is having an affair with his exact doppelganger, a dentist named Dr. Jeffrey Korchek. But while Munson fumbles with empty rhetoric and Korchek grows obsessed with a strange new patient, a psychotic exterminator named Elmo Oxygen quietly roams the town—seducing lonely wives and photographing his own genitals—turning a quiet crisis of identity into something far stranger and more unhinged.
