In the spring of 2016, archaeologists working a dried lakebed in the Nefud
Desert picked up a fossil finger bone three centimetres long. It turned out to
be the oldest directly dated trace of our own species anywhere outside Africa,
and it was lying in sediment full of freshwater snails and hippopotamus bone.
Saudi Arabia has no permanent river and no natural lake. But satellite mapping
has now identified the beds of roughly ten thousand ancient ones, and sediment
cores show the peninsula turned green at least five separate times in the last
half a million years, each time the monsoon walked north across the Red Sea.
