???? A veteran heavyweight and near-champion, Mountain Rivera (Anthony Quinn), has suddenly found himself washed up in the only trade he knows -- prizefighting. While hunting for a job, he meets Grace Miller (Julie Harris), a sympathetic employment counselor who not only tries getting him hired at a summer camp, but is attracted to him as well. Yet, threatened by gangsters for welshing on a gambling debt, Mountain's manager, Maish Rennick (Jackie Gleason), schemes to get the ex-boxer into a phony wrestling match to make some quick money. Although he and his loyal trainer, Army (Mickey Rooney), oppose the degrading proposition, the disillusioned Mountain goes through with the match, agreeing to expose himself to ridicule and abuse when the life of his former manager and friend is at stake.
