During a Foreign Affairs Committee meeting on Wednesday, Uma Kumaran, Labour Member of Parliament for Stratford and Bow, asked the UK’s Middle East Minister, Hamish Falconer, about Dr Hussam Abu Safiya’s case and what further pressure the UK is prepared to apply to secure his release, along with that of other medical and aid workers.

Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, was detained by Israeli forces on 27 December 2024, when the facility was the last functioning hospital in northern Gaza.

United Nations experts have called on Israel to immediately release him and all health and care workers held in what they described as arbitrary detention.
