A newly discovered piece of malware is putting crypto users on alert, and all it takes is a single USB drive. Microsoft has revealed details of a malicious worm known as CryptoBandits, which has reportedly been targeting cryptocurrency wallets since February 2026.

According to Microsoft's research, the malware hides inside a shortcut file on an infected USB stick. Once a user plugs in the drive and opens the file, the malware installs silently in the background. From there, it continuously monitors the device, scanning the clipboard every 500 milliseconds for sensitive crypto information.

The threat becomes especially dangerous when users copy wallet addresses, seed phrases, or private keys. CryptoBandits can reportedly capture this information and send it to attackers through the Tor network. Researchers also found that the malware takes multiple screenshots of the victim's device, potentially exposing additional sensitive data.

One of the most concerning features is clipboard hijacking. If a user copies a cryptocurrency wallet address to send Bitcoin, Ethereum, stablecoins, or other digital assets, the malware can silently replace it with an attacker's address before the user pastes it. Funds can then be sent to the wrong wallet without any visible warning.

Microsoft is advising users to disable AutoRun, carefully verify wallet addresses before sending funds, and avoid entering sensitive crypto information on devices they do not fully trust. The discovery is another reminder that cybersecurity remains one of the most important aspects of protecting digital assets in crypto.
