But that raises the question: did he forget who started this war in the first place?

It is easy to frame retaliation as strength when you ignore the opening move. If a country helps create the conflict, escalates the situation, or throws the first punch, then “shooting back” is not just defense — it becomes part of the same cycle of violence.

Calling restraint “stupid” may sound tough, but endless escalation is not wisdom. Real strength is knowing when to stop, when to de-escalate, and when to admit that more violence will only bring more destruction.

Before leaders talk about shooting back, maybe they should answer a simpler question: who lit the match? Because the people paying the price are rarely the ones who started the fire.
