Maleficent is a 2014 American fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Pictures and directed by Robert Stromberg in his directorial debut. The film is a live-action reimagining of Disney's 1959 animated classic Sleeping Beauty, telling the story from the perspective of its main antagonist, Maleficent. Angelina Jolie stars as Maleficent, a powerful fairy who lives peacefully in a magical forest until a betrayal by a former lover, Stefan, changes her life forever. After Stefan becomes king, Maleficent places a curse on his newborn daughter, Princess Aurora. As Aurora grows older, however, Maleficent develops a deep bond with her and begins to question her own actions, ultimately discovering that the nature of true love is very different from what she once believed.
