One of the biggest myths in cybersecurity is that you need a super expensive laptop to get started.

The truth is that most beginners can learn cybersecurity, practice labs, and run multiple virtual machines without spending a fortune. What matters most is having enough RAM, a capable processor, and an SSD, not the most premium laptop on the market.

In this Q&A, I share the laptop setup I’ve personally used throughout my cybersecurity journey. I’ve mainly used Windows Lenovo laptops for personal learning and projects, while I’ve worked with Dell laptops in professional environments.

If you’re planning to start a career in cybersecurity, focus on:
✅ RAM first
✅ A capable CPU
✅ SSD storage
✅ Reliability over flashy features

* 4GB RAM → Barely enough for modern Windows and a browser with multiple tabs. Running virtual machines will be frustrating or impractical.
* 8GB RAM → Absolute minimum if you’re on a very tight budget, but you’ll quickly hit limitations with VMs.
* 16GB RAM → Recommended for most cybersecurity work.
* 32GB RAM → Ideal if you plan to run multiple VMs, Active Directory labs, malware analysis environments, or heavier tooling.

If you already own a laptop with 4GB RAM,
Start learning with what you have. You can learn networking, Linux, Python, web security concepts, and many cybersecurity fundamentals on a 4GB machine. But if you’re buying a laptop today, aim for at least 8-16 GB RAM.

Don’t let hardware stop you from learning valuable cybersecurity skills.
