Eric O'Neill, a former FBI counterintelligence operative, explains why going on the dark web without knowing what you're doing will destroy your computer — and why even the experts who go in safely can't fully protect themselves.

O'Neill's rule is simple: if you don't know exactly what you're doing on the dark web, you will lose all your data. Whatever computer you're using is going to get compromised.

His friend Tom is what O'Neill calls a 'dark web spelunker' — a term he coined for the cybersecurity experts who go down into the dark web with the tools, the equipment, and the knowhow to find the bad stuff and report it. They go in as safely as anyone can.

Even Tom, with all his expertise, runs his sessions inside a virtual machine — a virtual computer set up on his real one for an extra layer of protection. In just a few hours of work, his VM crashed three or four times. Each time, he had to reinstall the entire operating system and start over.

That's where the biggest fight in cybersecurity is happening right now. The good guys against the bad guys, deep underneath the internet the rest of us use.
