Behind Hitler stood a man who turned loyalty into one of the most terrifying systems of control in modern history. Heinrich Himmler transformed the SS from a small bodyguard unit into a vast empire of surveillance, violence, forced labor and mass murder. Through the Gestapo, SD, concentration camps and police forces, he built a state within the Nazi state, targeting political opponents, Jews, Roma and Sinti, forced laborers and anyone the regime marked as an enemy.

This documentary follows Himmler's rise from the failed Beer Hall Putsch to the center of Nazi power. It traces Dachau, Kristallnacht, Operation Himmler, the invasion of Poland, Einsatzgruppen massacres and the Holocaust by bullets, before examining the death camps of Belzec, Treblinka, Sobibor, Chelmno, Auschwitz and Majdanek. It also reveals the SS slave labor empire, Mauthausen's ""Stairway of Death,"" Himmler's failed military command in 1945 and his final attempt to escape justice by suicide.
