Most of us will never be the target of state-based spyware.

But a small group will: human rights lawyers, investigative journalists, democratic services.

For them, identifying the spyware has always been the hard part.

But that changed this month.

Google has added a new feature to Android called Intrusion Logging, which records application installs, remote unlocks, and other forensically useful activity.

Only the device owner can unlock it with their password, not even Google can access it.

It was built in conjunction with Amnesty International and Reporters Without Borders.

Amnesty is calling it a first: a major operating system manufacturer has worked out a way to prove when they’ve been attacked.

That’s a meaningful step.

Great work Amnesty, Reporters Without Borders, and Google for making this happen.
