Harold is spending the day at the amusement park, unfulfilled and alone. He thinks his day has the possibility of looking up when he spots Mildred, the girl of his dreams, on a date at the park with Roy. Harold thinks he can take Mildred away from Roy. Harold does whatever he can to impress Mildred, while putting Roy in a bad light. Ultimately, Mildred, who has two tickets for a romantic hot air balloon ride, says that she will take that ride with whoever can get the approval from her mother to do so first. Harold gets into one misadventure after another in the entire process, which includes being in possession of a stolen purse, which he is unaware belongs to Mildred and which contains the two tickets.

A young New Yorker is the bane of his Christian parents' existence because of his constant carousing and partying at all hours, so his father decides to send him to live at his uncle's ranch in Piute Pass in the Wild West to get him away from the New York temptations that led to this unwanted behavior. Before he even gets to the ranch, the young man gets into one misadventure after another using his New York sensibilities in Piute Pass. His primary misadventure involves a sweet young ingénue with whom he falls in love at first sight, which is mutual. Her father is being held captive by "Tiger Lip" Tompkins, who owns half the county and bullies the rest with his band, the Masked Angels; the ransom is her womanly favors to him. The young man tries to help free the father so that the young man and the ingénue can live happily ever after together, which does not sit well with Tiger Lip and the Masked Angels.

She's a chorus girl in unpaid tryouts for a Broadway show, behind in her rent, about to be evicted. He's in the room next door, from Peoria, struggling to write his first comedy; he's also behind in his rent. He gives her his last dollar so she can square with "Bearcat," the landlady, then he has to avoid Bearcat and her bouncer. Later, he tries to get his comedy read by the production manager at the same theater where his neighbor's just been fired. She's desperate, so she agrees to lunch with a Lothario, who takes her to a speakeasy. Our comedy-writer follows them to the club where an accidental roulette bet, a police raid, and a hectic pursuit end the story.
