From “Corrupt” To BJP Leader? The Washing Machine Debate

Political analyst Anand Ranganathan once spoke in a podcast about BJP’s “ghobi ghat” or “washing machine” model — the idea that leaders whom the party once accused of corruption and targeted in rallies later end up joining the same party and even getting powerful positions.

One major example often discussed is Suvendu Adhikari. During the West Bengal elections, BJP strongly raised the Narada sting operation issue. PM Narendra Modi also attacked leaders seen taking bribes on camera without directly naming them in rallies. At that time, BJP presented it as proof of corruption in West Bengal politics. But later, Suvendu Adhikari joined BJP and today he is one of the party’s biggest faces in Bengal, even being projected as a possible Chief Ministerial face.

A similar example is Himanta Biswa Sarma. When he was in Congress, BJP used to attack the Assam government over corruption allegations. But after joining BJP, Himanta became one of the party’s strongest leaders in the Northeast and is now serving his second term as Assam’s Chief Minister.

Because of such examples, opposition parties and many political commentators call BJP a “washing machine” party — suggesting that leaders who were once called corrupt suddenly become acceptable after joining the party. BJP supporters respond by saying that allegations alone do not prove corruption unless courts establish guilt. They also argue that a large national party naturally brings strong leaders from different parties into its fold to expand politically.

The reality today is that this is not limited to BJP alone. Almost every major political party in India has at some point welcomed leaders from rival parties despite earlier criticizing them. But BJP faces more questions because it presents itself as a party of nationalism, anti-corruption, and clean governance. And when the country’s largest party appears to do the same things for which it criticizes others, people naturally question it more.
