Do people speak English in Romania? Yes—in my experience as an American living in Romania, you can get by in English in many everyday situations. But English will not work everywhere, and learning Romanian makes a difference if you want to build a life here.

I'm Eric Bevill, an American living in Romania. If you're visiting Romania, thinking about moving to Romania, or wondering what daily life is like as an expat, here's what I've experienced when speaking English with Romanians.

Can you visit Romania without speaking Romanian? Can you live in Romania with only English? I share where English has worked for me, where Romanian still matters, and why getting by is different from feeling at home.

We talk about English in shops, restaurants, pubs and the workplace; ordering from menus; making yourself understood at the doctor; and learning useful Romanian words. I also explore English-language movies and subtitles, Irina Margareta Nistor and the VHS generation, streaming services, music, and the difference between speaking English and speaking “American.”
