Between the Meiji era and the Second World War, Japan transformed from a closed society into a major world power. Baron Makino Nobuaki, born the son of a samurai, witnessed this transformation and became one of the Emperor’s closest advisers.

The film traces Japan’s modernization, from the Iwakura mission and the decline of the samurai to victory over Russia, the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, and the rise of colonial ambitions in Asia.
As Hirohito entered the Showa era, Makino tried to guide the young emperor toward restraint while militarists and nationalists pushed Japan toward expansion. Assassinations, political pressure, Manchuria, Shanghai and the collapse of civilian authority marked the path to war.

Through Makino’s role and the rivalry with Prince Fumimaro Konoe, the documentary examines how Japan moved from modernization and diplomacy toward militarism, Pearl Harbor and defeat.
