My Favorite Brunette (1950)
Director: William Beaudine
Cast: Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall, Adele Jergens
The film kicks off with the ever-scheming Slip Mahoney hatching what he considers his most brilliant business idea yet: opening a rival escort bureau to put a snooty competing agency out of business. With his loyal but hapless pal Sach in tow, along with the rest of the gang Butch, Whitey, and Chuck Slip sets about trying to borrow start-up money from every corner of the neighborhood, starting with their friend Gabe at the local bank.
But their entrepreneurial ambitions quickly spiral out of control when a criminal gang gets wind of their operation and forces the boys into a scheme to steal $5,000. Before they know it, Slip and the gang find themselves entangled in a full-blown crime caper, complete with double-crosses, chases, and more misunderstandings than even Sach can keep track of.
Meanwhile, their lovable friend Louie Dumbrowski the long-suffering soda fountain owner who has endured the gang's antics for years is pulled into the chaos too. When Sach stumbles upon what appears to be uranium ore beneath Louie's shop, the gang becomes convinced they are all about to become fabulously wealthy. Visions of riches fill everyone's heads until the gang's harebrained escape tunnel, drilled from a jail cell, leads them not to freedom but straight up through the floor of the local police station. And just when things couldn't get any more absurd, a lawyer arrives with a very old deed and some very inconvenient small print that turns the uranium windfall on its head entirely.
Filled with rapid-fire wordplay, physical gags, slaps, shouts, and the irreplaceable chemistry between Leo Gorcey and Huntz Hall, Blonde Dynamite is the Bowery Boys at their most entertainingly chaotic.
