???? A Chinese cybersecurity expert just demonstrated on live TV that AI photo enhancement tools can pull fingerprint ridges off a normal selfie.

???? Once extracted, those reconstructed prints could potentially be used to spoof phone unlocks, banking apps, and smart door locks. Reports out of Hangzhou described criminals allegedly attempting exactly that on a smart lock after a homeowner posted a photo online.

???? Here’s the nuance worth chewing on. One Microsoft security architect called this “technically possible but a pretty targeted threat.” Translation: this is real, but it’s more of a risk for public figures, executives, and people whose photos circulate widely than it is for someone posting a vacation pic to 200 friends.

Still. Two things are true at once. The technical barrier is dropping fast as phone cameras keep getting better. And the safest fingerprint is the one you never put online.
