Europe has been quietly making some of the most ambitious science fiction ever put on film. Almost none of it reached Western audiences. One of these films predicted The Matrix 26 years before The Matrix existed. Another was finished by a director's family after he died before he could complete it. These aren't obscure because they're bad — they're obscure because nobody distributed them.

In this video, I rank 13 vastly underrated European sci-fi films spanning five decades and eight countries, including a Soviet comedy so subversive it invented its own language, a Czech film that may have inspired both Kubrick and Tarkovsky, and a Japanese director who traveled to Poland to make the film his own country wouldn't fund.
