Horror as a genre has been around for over a hundred years now, and each era has brought us a different kind of monster and villain. If the 30s and 40s were about the classic Universal monsters, the 50s pushed sci-fi nightmares into the mainstream, while the 60s and 70s slowly dragged horror toward slashers, psychological terror, and more grounded human monsters. But when John Carpenter made Halloween and gave us Michael Myers in the late 70s, he did not know that he was writing history and changing how horror movies would be made for the next twenty years. In the 80s and the 90s, we not only got slashers like Freddy, Pinhead, Jason, and Leatherface, but also aliens like The Thing. Even Stephen King’s villains got their fair share of fame during this time, but this is just the tip of the iceberg.
