*With English CC Intertitles* Manolescu (1929), also known as Manolescu – Der König der Hochstapler, is a German silent crime drama directed by Viktor Tourjansky and starring Russian screen legend Ivan Mosjoukine as the charismatic Romanian adventurer and master swindler George Manolescu. Living a life of deception and luxury, Manolescu becomes involved with the glamorous Cleo, played by Metropolis star Brigitte Helm, who encourages his criminal ambitions. After a violent confrontation with Cleo’s jealous former lover Jack leaves him seriously injured, Manolescu is taken to a hospital where he meets the compassionate nurse Jeanette, played by Dita Parlo, and begins imagining a very different future.

Produced by Noë Bloch and Gregor Rabinovitch for UFA, Manolescu combines crime, romance, melodrama, luxury settings, and the sophisticated visual style of late Weimar silent cinema. The title character was loosely inspired by the real-life Romanian confidence man George Manolescu, whose exploits became famous across Europe in the early twentieth century. Photographed by Carl Hoffmann with sets designed by Robert Herlth and Walter Röhrig, the film was shot partly in St. Moritz and premiered in Germany on August 22, 1929. Long difficult to see, Manolescu has since been digitally restored by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung, returning this striking late-silent production to audiences after decades of obscurity.
